Location
Catania is a city on the east coast of Sicily at the foot of Mount Etna, the biggest and most active volcano in Europe. It was a flourishing cultural centre during the Renaissance but was largely destroyed by a great earthquake in 1693. The city is now characterised by the attractive Baroque architecture of the buildings that followed.
